Abstract
In this chapter, we will discuss the designing of millimeter wave based CMOS PAs (Power Amplifiers) which work in broadband spectrum. Here, the fundamentals of power amplifiers designing, and associated difficulties involved in millimeter wave operations are discussed. A few complexities of AB type power amplifier operations viz. efficacy at power back-off, main reasons behind amplitude modulation-phase modulation distortions and techniques to have linear PAs are mentioned. Finally, the last section confers the design and layout of a 29–57 GHz (65% bandwidth) amplitude modulation-phase modulation compensated AB class PA designed for 5G phased arrays. Many methodologies are given for understanding cancellation of wideband distortion and load impedance, though the two-way power combining is allowed to enhance the delivered output power.
