CHAPTER 5

RFID and the Internet of Things

Imagine waking up and lifting your head off the pillow. The sensor in the pillow sends a message for your coffee maker to start. As you get your morning cup of coffee, a sensor sends a message for the shower to come on at just the right temperature. As you are opening the door to leave your home to go to work, your home sends a message to your car to start, then your car sends a message to your work stating that you have left your residence in route to the office. When you arrive at your office, the coffee is made and your computer is booted and ready ... sounds a little futuristic! The reality is the capability is in place for these systems and networks (Figure 5.1).
