In March of 1993 I landed on the ground in Zagreb, the national capital of Croatia. Croatia and neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina were embroiled in brutal and bloody civil wars that had ensued after the break-up of Yugoslavia during 1991–1992. I was placed in charge of a medical assistance project to provide support for the medical needs of refugees and displaced persons in Croatia.
