Any organisation that sets out to buy and integrate advanced technology will have some concept of its future TOM, or more prosaically, what BAU will look like. The TOM is the target that we are aiming at when we decide to invest in advanced technology. The more complex an organisation, or the product, the greater the likelihood that integration issues will emerge and need managing. As we continue to consider the project sourcing phase, we should try to incorporate joined-up thinking around how our suppliers can impact and contribute towards a successful TOM – that ‘targeted’ future state. How can potential suppliers bring practical benefits to us now, during the pre-contract sourcing phase?
