Robots can talk – but can they teach?
Abstract: In 2013, the Japanese newspaper, The Yomiuri Shimbun, published the following news: an android will teach Japanese in Hanoi, Vietnam. That android is Geminoid F and Hiroshi Ishiguro, its creator, is confident that it can be an effective foreign-language instructor because of its human-like facial expressions. Successful language teaching, however, involves far more than teaching pronunciation or even other linguistic skills. Through various interactions, teachers manage complex goals such as providing emotional support and/or developing rapport with the class.
