Hypergrowth

Can It Be Sustained?

There are two beliefs about growth that are well acclaimed in academic studies: first, that high growth cannot last forever; and second, it is more difficult to keep up the pace of growth when much of it has already taken place. The first speaks to natural limits of resources and human capital. As with all natural units that require sustained resources that are also limited, there is a cycle of reproduction, growth, and decay. Eventually, growth will approach its natural limit. The second speaks to the baseline in which growth is measured. In emerging and developing markets, growth will outstrip developed economies simply because there are more prodigious opportunities to grow and develop.
