INTRODUCTION TO INTRODUCTORY NETWORK DESIGN

Part I consists of three chapters. The goal of this part is to acquaint the reader with the basic ideas in network design, to introduce the proper notation for network modeling, and to show how to formulate basic design problems, first in a general way, and then for selected, technology-related cases.

In Chapter 1, we start with an overview of communication and computer networks, showing why traffic (demand) is different for different networks and describing its role in network design. We then show simple examples to illustrate how routing can influence network design. We also discuss the architecture of networks and the network management cycle and discuss their relation to network design.
