Technology-Related Modeling Examples

In Chapter 2, we have introduced several types of network design problems (NDPs) and illustrated them with simple examples; in the process, we have shown how to formulate/represent NDPs as multi-commodity flow problems. Reading this book will help make it clear that multi-commodity flow models are of major importance in communication and computer network design. While multi-commodity flow models are now commonly used in many other areas outside telecommunications, it is indeed interesting to note that the first formulation of multi-commodity flow problem was for communication networks [KJ56].
