Claire Kramsch was born and educated in France. In her professional life she was Instructor for German at the Lycée de Sèvres in France (1959–60), Instructor for French at the Institut Français in Freiburg, Germany (1961–63), Instructor, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Professor of Foreign Language Acquisition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston (1965–89) and has been Full Professor in the Department of German and Affiliate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California at Berkeley since 1989.
