Abstract
This chapter will offer an overview of embedded systems and their usage in the automotive domain. It will focus on the constraints particular to embedded systems in the automotive area with emphasis on providing dependable systems in harsh environments specific to this domain. The chapter will also mention challenges for automotive embedded systems deriving from modern emerging applications like autonomous driving.
