4 The Anglo-Saxon Futhorc

Most rune-workers I know work exclusively with the Elder Futhark, the 24 runes described in the previous chapter. Recently, however, there has been a growing interest in the extra Futhorc runes, the Anglo-Saxon and Northumbrian runes not included in the original Futhark. Raven Kaldera, one of the first people to write about using these runes as a Northern Tradition Shaman, notes: “As I studied them…I was moved and shaken by the deep meanings of the extra runes. They are dark, complex, and difficult; their concepts are ambivalent, and they reek of the Rokkr or Jotnar, the ‘dark gods’ of Norse mythology.”
