The Java Development Kit (JDK) is a set of command-line utilities that are used to create, compile, and run Java programs. The JDK requires a command prompt because you run each of its programs by typing in its name along with any arguments that are needed.
Windows 95 and Windows NT Configuration
Windows 95 and Windows NT users can get to a command prompt by using the MS-DOS Prompt command, available as Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt from the taskbar.
