Q1: What’s a layer 3 switch?
A1: Layer 3 refers to layer 3 of the OSI model, discussed in Hour 2. Layer 3 is the network layer. A device that forwards traffic on layer 3 is a router. Manufacturers refer to routers as layer 3 switches when they are capable of operating at wire speed. Layer 3 switch is basically a marketing term for “fast router with built-in switch ports.”
