Installing on Linux
For installation on Linux or Unix, we'll consider binary, source, and RPM methods of installation. You will need to have root access to your machine to perform these installations.
Binary Installation on Linux
The binary installation method can be the easiest and quickest. Download the binary to disk. The downloaded file will be called something like mysql-4.0.1-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz (or similar, according to MySQL product, version, your system hardware, and operating system).
Note
Since early versions of MySQL 4, there has been a choice of MySQL “products.” All the binaries have been compiled by MySQL from the same source version, but they differ in the optional components that have been included in the compilation.
