Securing Your Web Server

Before you can begin to think about securing your CGI programs, be sure that your Web server is reasonably secure at the operating system level. There are all kinds of guidelines for securing the operating system on which your Web server runs that I won’t go into here. Entire books on UNIX and Windows security exist, and if you’re in charge of the computer on which the Web server runs, you should do some research and make sure that the computer is protected against attack. One of the easiest steps to take is to turn off every network service that you aren’t actually using. If malicious users can’t connect to a computer using a particular service, they certainly can’t exploit that service.
