Alternative (Non-KDE) Windowing Environments
In this section, we will look at a few of the alternatives available to KDE. Even if you like KDE, I encourage you to give a few of these a try just so you can get a feel for the variety that is out there.
WindowMaker
WindowMaker is a very popular window manager that is available for FreeBSD. It is basically a clone of the desktop designed for the now defunct NextSTEP system. Although NextSTEP itself now survives only as the framework for Apple's Mac OS X, adherents to the design philosophy of the platform in its early conception often find WindowMaker to be an attractive implementation of those design goals.
