There’s no law that says you have to do anything at all offline—stay online all you want, see if I care. These days most of us have unlimited Internet accounts, so it costs us nothing extra to stay online as long as we need to. Still, many of us have only one phone line, and often it’s hard to do what you want to do online while still keeping the phone line free for other uses.
