In the three-tier SAP architecture, the presentation layer provides the interface for interaction of the system with the most important person in the SAP system—the user. The introduction of the SAP graphical user interface (SAPGUI) in conjunction with SAP R/3 was a real novelty in those days when text-oriented terminals were standard in most enterprises. The design of the SAPGUI was characterized by the goal of providing professional users with an optimal interface for running business transactions.
