Sample link budget
Scenario: A major news event has occurred at Buckingham Palace in London, and an SNG uplink is going to be set-up to provide live coverage. The uplink is working onto a Eutelsat satellite, and the digital 8 Mbps TV signal is going to be downlinked at a number of locations, including a teleport in London.
We need to calculate the link budget for a digital transmission, as well as calculating positional information for setting up the uplink.
The link budget shown is of the simplified type – full link budgets have to take into account many more parameters than we have included, but the basic principles are illustrated here.
Note: Many of the trigonometric calculations have to be performed with values in radians ...
