10Critical Communication Tools
In this chapter we get into some communication tools I use to help folks we are interacting with to be more amenable to push back regardless of the power differential, the obstacle, and even the circumstances. As I have stated elsewhere in this book, there is always a way to say something and a way for it to land. How we say it is a big part of that. From the language we choose to use to our body language to our tone, mastering a few basics can help you to more confidently challenge or speak up. Speaking of confidence, next I cover some ways to find and use your confidence to help affect your messaging.
Word Choice and Approach
Word choice, approach, body language, and tone are all foundational parts of communicating, but from what I have observed, we don't always employ these elements in the ways that can get the best results for us when we are communicating. When we are considering making an impact, through pushing back or even just sharing a message, we should be thoughtful about how each of these elements can come to life, because any of them can shape how the person or people you are speaking to will receive and react to the message. Let's start with our actual word choices and our approach.
