7.1. Introduction

In the previous chapters, we saw many typical examples of capacity planning situations. In this chapter, we discuss in detail a methodology for carrying out capacity planning studies in the context of e-business. This methodology is different from the ones used in Web server or client server environments [6] [7] because it includes the business level and customer behavior levels.

We start by defining adequate capacity and then present an example of a capacity planning situation. The capacity planning methodology is then presented and the various steps of the methodology are presented in light of the example. Some of the steps of the methodology are covered in much greater detail in other chapters of this book.
