As you have just learned in the previous chapter, virtualization within the data center had a considerable impact on network addressing and how individual virtual machines (VMs) were uniquely identified within the switched network. You learned that the hypervisor took the role of a virtual switch within the hypervisor software layer and interacted with the network controller to assign and manage Layer 2 switching identifiers. The data center access switches were oblivious to these new networking elements, and they continued to operate as before using the standard Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) to update their switching tables.
