As you have just learned in the previous chapter, virtualization within the data center had a considerable impact on network addressing and how individual virtual machines (VMs) were uniquely identified within the switched network. You learned that the hypervisor took the role of a virtual switch within the hypervisor software layer and interacted with the network controller to assign and manage Layer 2 switching identifiers.
