40. Pulling It All Together

While it worked really well, for a really long time, traditional network designs have turned out to be ill-suited to delivering the application performance and services required by today’s enterprises, cloud service providers, and end users—partly the result of the explosion in mobile device traffic traversing the network and the surge in popularity of mobile/web applications, and partly due to server virtualization in the data center (which has enabled cloud service providers to offer compute, storage, and network services on an unprecedented scale). The net result of all of these changes is that the industry has had to rethink networking.
