Let's kick off this chapter with a call to action to humbly ground us in the immense responsibility we have as entrepreneurs and business owners:
Our actions and choices have the power to create change and positively influence society, as well as entire generations to come.
These actions, decisions, and choices are rooted in what makes you, you—your values, your impact, your purpose, and the legacy you'd like to leave on the world. So, how will you leave the world?
In this chapter, we will focus on the intersection of modern leadership, work, and how to shape a congruent culture for your business, keeping in sight the impact and legacy you'd like to make. We'll aim to shift the mindset that doing well and doing good are mutually exclusive because business owners and entrepreneurs often focus heavily on the former of the two. Doing well, often characterized as achieving the goals and objectives of the company, is actually about the people who are getting the work done. At the same time, doing good spans far beyond workplace perks and keeping your employees satisfied. It includes things like:
- Contributing to your employees' and customers' wellbeing, wealth, legacy, and purpose.
- Developing policies and programs that correspond with your values.
- Unpacking and understanding your organization's culture can impact how work does or doesn't get done.
