CHAPTER 8Self‐Leadership and Leading in Challenging Times

During my time as a finance and business strategy executive in the corporate world, I remember being so worried about getting every detail right in my presentations. I would review them repeatedly until I strained my eyes. I would work endlessly up until the deadline, leaving very little time to prepare myself mentally and answer any questions that may be asked. It became cumbersome and frustrating because I wasted my efforts before the final mile.
This paralysis by analysis is something with which many perfectionists struggle. They often only see the trees and lose sight of the forest. As I progressed into leadership roles, I noticed that this myopic view would not serve me well. I had to shift my mindset and learn to lead myself more effectively if I had any chance of leading a team. I had to find out how to be a leader who doesn't get stuck in the weeds. If I wanted to maintain the energy and vitality to lead others, I had to become more intentional in allocating my time and energy.
What I discovered is the power of self‐leadership. Once I stepped into my power as a leader, I started to shape my world, and felt more fulfilled in the process.
