Before acting with purpose and direction, you must understand who you are, what you need to change, and what comes thereafter.

It's nearly impossible to act intentionally when you are unaware of your preferences, gifts, talents, values, beliefs, purpose, and tendencies. If you are unaware, you are living life—day after day, year after year—oblivious to your thoughts and beliefs.

To acknowledge diversity across personalities and provide a framework for self‐awareness, development, and understanding of the self and others, CRG Authors and I have collaborated to create the Personality Factors Development Model. I will get into the details of the model in the second half of this chapter, but before that, it's crucial to ground the fundamental importance of self‐awareness.

We have met individuals who are utterly unaware of their behavior and conduct. They may even be inappropriate and affect others negatively. They have no clue, often even missing cues.

According to Dr. Tasha Eurich, who wrote the New York Times best seller Insight, self‐awareness is the meta‐skill for the twenty‐first century and foundational to our success. In her study, 95 percent of individuals believed they were self‐aware, and that their opinions self matched what others thought about them.
