The product manager, and product management, has the responsibility to shepherd a product from inception, through creation and sales, into the customers’ hands, and ultimately into retirement. Product management is at its core a marketing job even though the product happens to be software systems. Yet it is often performed by engineers, either because they have strong technical knowledge to contribute or often because marketing fails to fill the role.
