Managing Third-Party Applications

Third-party applications are not part of a distribution, for various reasons. Sometimes those issues are related to licensing; sometimes they are related to support. Although many developers behind third-party applications test their work with major distributions, there are rarely warranties with respect to truly open-source software.

Licensing Issues

Two sets of issues are associated with licensing. First, not all Linux software is open source. Anyone who does not release source code or does not allow others to modify his or her source code cannot use open-source licenses. Second, some controversial software packages may pose different sorts of licensing issues.
