6 The Analyst's Process The Mind of the Other

To this point, we have considered the creation of the self from the viewpoint of the patient and in that context have seen the key role the therapist plays in this project. The fact that the therapist's subjectivity has not yet been discussed in detail is an expository artifact as his experience of the interaction is brought into the therapeutic engagement at each stage of the undertaking. We have seen the involvement of the therapist in the creation of potential space, the analyst's vision of the patient, and the creation of new possibilities. Let's now take the opportunity to reflect on the therapist's subjectivity from each of these points of view.
