I can still remember what it felt like being in over $100 000 of debt in my 20s (the equivalent of about $140 000 today). Going from one personal loan to multiple maxed-out credit cards, mounting unpaid amenity bills, overdue day care fees, over 200 enforcement warrants and hundreds of unpaid CityLink fines.

Feeling as though I was no longer in control of my finances felt both terrifying and suffocating. When I was experiencing severe financial difficulty, that feeling never really left me. It was there the moment I woke up in the morning, and it was still there when I went to bed at night. It felt as though there was no escaping it. Well, at least this is how I remember it feeling for me for the best part of 14 years. And while in this chapter I am going to talk a lot about what I have done to turn my financial situation around and work on my mental relationship with money, there are still moments where I find myself falling back into old patterns of thinking about money.
