This article focused on the visual appearance of the distortion residuals produced by THD analysis. The distortion products may be low-order, in which case, if they appear alone they are simply second or third harmonic, looking basically sinusoidal. If both second and third appear together, which is very common, it is hard to visually disentangle the two because of unknown phase shifts between them; spectrum analysis is useful here. Higher-order harmonics are signalled by angular features or glitches in the THD residual.
