Like several of the ideas described in these articles, this one goes a good deal further back than you might think. The germ of the idea was formed in 1976. At that time, there was a popular quad opamp called the LM324, which was an economical way of deploying four opamps, but which in audio applications gave a fairly pitiful distortion performance due to its markedly asymmetrical load-driving capabilities.
