Lesson 4: Configuring DirectAccess

For years, administrators used VPNs to connect mobile users with Internet access to an intranet. VPNs can be frustrating for both users and administrators, however. The biggest challenge with a VPN is staying connected, because users have to manually initiate a connection.

For users, this means they have to think about whether a network resource, such as their email, is on the Internet or their intranet. If a resource is on the intranet, they have to initiate a VPN connection, provide their credentials, and wait for the connection to be established. Often, users do not bother, and they miss opportunities to be productive because internal resources are too time-consuming to access.
