In The Boys in the Boat, Daniel James Brown tells the story of a group of eight country boys at the University of Washington who came together and, despite all odds, defeated teams from elite rowing schools in the Northeast, and qualified for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. This underdog team ultimately won a gold medal at those Games. The process for some of the men who were competing for the seats on that boat began four years earlier. (Brown, 2013)
