As far as eBay is concerned, the online auction format is a thing of the past; the future revolves around fixed-price listings. That’s what more and more buyers presumably want, and it’s certainly what eBay is pushing and incentivizing.
While some sellers might be so ticked off at eBay’s changes as to completely abandon the eBay marketplace, other sellers see value in staying (at least partially) with eBay but migrating their merchandise from the online auction format to the fixed-price format.
