Old wooden ships sail using basic design principles. The massive sails catch the wind. A sail is connected to a vertical pole called a mast. There could be several masts depending on the size of the ship. A mast attaches through the deck to the base of the ship. It’s mind-boggling that wooden ships could withstand the tumultuous oceans and turbulent storms. Imagine the strain placed on a mast as the wind howls. What keeps the mast in place?
