9Relationship with Followers
Sensible Leadership gives high priority to the relationship with followers. Leaders as individuals receive much attention in leadership studies, but they need followers; otherwise, leadership is meaningless. There are no leaders without followers willing to go along with them, take the risk of trusting them, be part of their projects and dreams, and become jointly responsible for advancing the organizational mission. Leaders need followers, just as followers need leaders. Grint (2005) pointed out that “It only takes followers to do nothing for leadership to fail”. Coworkers are indeed followers when they recognize and accept the influence of leaders.
