7International SEO Specificities
Often, when we talk about SEO in the Western world, we are referring to that which is done in the case of Google. However, there are other local search engines that better meet market criteria.
Here are the most popular search engines by country, territory or region of the world:
- – North America and Europe: Google, Bing;
- – China: Baidu, Qihoo 360, Shenma (Alibaba), Sogou;
- – South Korea: Sorry, Daum;
- – France: Qwant;
- – Japan: Yahoo! Japan;
- – Czech Republic: Seznam;
- – Russia: Yandex.
There are still other more secondary search engines such as Ask.com, AOL, DuckDuckGo, etc., but their market shares are often less than 2 or 3%.
In the remaining chapter, we will focus on the three main search engines other than Google: Baidu, Yandex and Naver.
7.1. Baidu SEO
Baidu is the top search engine used in China. It was created in 2000 by Robin Lin, an engineer. In 2018, Baidu had nearly 69.74% of the market share in China. The next most popular search engines are Qihoo 360, Shenma and Sogou. Google has almost no market share in China, with only 1.53%.
