Chapter 11. Selection Criteria and Total Cost of Ownership

In this chapter we first take a brief look at appropriate selection criteria for servers, and then moves on to discuss a key economic element of server choice: a system’s total cost of ownership.

Selection Criteria

Over the course of the book, we have compared various architectural options: symmetrical multiprocessors (tightly-coupled machines) in Chapter 4, clusters and massively parallel machines (loosely-coupled machines) in Chapter 5, servers and DBMS in Chapter 8, storage in Chapter 6 and performance in Chapter 7.

We shall not revisit the conclusions and commentaries of those chapters here, but rather will concentrate on user needs and thus the choice of appropriate selection criteria. ...
