DynamoDB has its roots in the Dynamo key-value store. Amazon created Dynamo in response to a number of critical outages that occurred during the 2004 holiday shopping season.[52] Now the next generation of this system—DynamoDB—is available as a web service that you can use for your own projects.

One of Amazon’s goals with DynamoDB was to create a datastore that could scale without limit, and it seems to have achieved that.[53] There are no practical limits on the number of items you can store in a DynamoDB table or how big the table can be. In other words, as long as you keep paying your bill, Amazon will keep adding capacity.
