The Case of the UK “Big Freeze” of 2010

Introduction

In Chapter 5, three case studies illustrated how different forms of disasters and complex emergencies create unsettled times for communities. The case studies also demonstrate (in Chapter 6) that variations can occur depending on impact (functional, temporal, and spatial) and likelihood (which involves the degree of preparedness and anticipation). In this chapter, we have chosen a case study brought about by out-of-the-ordinary weather conditions for the particular location. The impact is low, if measured by the number of deaths, and the effects cover a relatively short period of time in comparison to the cases covered in Chapter 5.
