These devices have been around in consumer electronics for a very long time now – predominantly in VCRs, but their development and thus servicing had been minimal until a few years ago when Pace decided to do something a bit different with theirs in their satellite receivers. It still begs the question: why did no one manage to do it sooner and why do many still not do it now?

R.f. modulators take an audio and/or video signal and modulate it onto a r.f. carrier, in the UK a u.h.f. carrier, usually on a channel that is adjustable between 30 and 40. There have been channels in this area of the band that were not used for u.h.f. transmission (35–7) and so were suitable for these closed circuit applications. ...
