At the time of writing, we are just seeing the beginnings of the biggest revolution in television since the introduction of colour transmissions. Digital television systems are now in existence via satellite (see Fig. 14.1) and will soon be available terrestrially in the UK. The principles involved are rather more the province of mathematicians and computer software engineers than consumer electronics engineers, but you won’t find either of the aforementioned repairing the reception systems, so major effort is required on the part of ourselves to learn all about it.
