PREPRODUCTION PLANNING
During preproduction, the gaffer, rigging gaffer, and/or best boy meet with the DP and scout locations and sets, with the primary objective of compiling equipment lists and estimating manpower. Everything that will be needed to light the sets and locations needs to be set down on paper so that equipment vendors may prepare price quotes. The lighting order always represents a major expense to the production, so the UPM is eager to see the equipment list as early as possible in order to solidify deals with vendors and know where the budget stands.
