Check One More Reference

Roger looked at me and said, “Remember what Charles said about references verifying your gut feel. Well, I think reference checking is the most important step you can take to ensure what you see is what you get. References reduce the risk in making a hiring decision.”

Charles commented, “Roger just introduced the seventh rule, ‘Check One More Reference’.”

“What do you mean by ‘one more reference’? How do you know when you’ve reached that last reference?”

“You’ll know that when you receive consistent reports from the people you speak with about the candidate. Not just the names that the candidate gave you to contact, but additional people who you uncover in the process,” Charles responded.
