A line of stitching that connects two fabric pieces together is called a seam. The seam allowance is the amount of space between the seam and the cut edge of the fabric. Your pattern will indicate what the seam allowance is for your project. For instance, if the seam allowance is ⅝″, the distance between the edge of your fabric and the seam line will be ⅝″. Use the measurement etchings on your sewing machine to line up the fabric at the right length before making any stitches.

An open seam is one in which the seam allowances on each side of the seam have been pressed open, wrong side of fabric to wrong side of fabric. Generally open seams require that you finish your fabric edges to prevent them from unraveling.
