Prologue

A memo to our children and grandchildren:

Those of us who were lucky enough to be a part of the baby boom generation benefited enormously from an exceptional golden era in American history. From the 1940s to the 1970s, for most of us, as President Kennedy noted, “a rising tide lifted all boats.” As children we were told that if we worked hard, stayed in school, and played by the rules we could expect to realize the American Dream of doing better than the standard of living we experienced growing up. Unfortunately, we are not leaving your generation the same prospect for realizing the American Dream.

But all is not lost. I believe that if you learn from the legacy we were given, you can take control of your own destiny and turn this country ...
