For many, Monday 24 June 1929 was important because it brought the opening of the Championships at Wimbledon. There was disappointment that the 1928 men’s singles champion, Réné Lacoste, had decided not to defend his title, but excitement at the return of three former champions, not least Bill Tilden who had last won in 1921. In 1928, after he had lost to Lacoste in a gripping semi-final, it had been feared that he would never return. In the event, Centre Court was not full to see these former champions play, perhaps because members had heeded The Times’ warning that they would not be hard pressed.1
