Every user in SharePoint has a user profile, which includes not only a name and password but also information such as a photograph, skills, the person she reports to, and so on. The SharePoint administrator can set which of these properties should be used within SharePoint and can set each property to be read-only, or to allow users to edit properties. For example, the user’s cell phone number would be a property that the user should be able to edit, whereas the Reports To property may be imported from another application or the Active Directory.
