To achieve the goal of preserving information as a record (which includes preventing unauthorized changes to the information), SharePoint 2010 offers two primary mechanisms:
In-Place Records Management In this approach, information is kept in the location it was last edited but is locked to prevent further editing. In-place records management is designed for scenarios in which a document or list item is finalized and ready for preservation, and the document must remain in its original context.
